Catholic Bishops give support to International Co-operation in helping Refugees and Asylum
Seekers
The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference welcomes the news that Australia and Indonesia
will work together to focus international attention on refugees and asylum seekers.
Australia must be deeply involved and have a sense of urgency in seeking an international
solution to combat people smuggling, to find settlement for suffering people and to seek
ways to eliminate the root causes of enforced population movements.
As a people rich in material blessings, with an enviable record of welcome to refugees,
Australians can continue to be generous by showing compassion to those who call on us for
help.
Australia has benefited greatly from the contributions of those of our citizens who once
came to us as refugees and asylum seekers.
Our generosity will now enrich our nation in the future.
Let's not be afraid to open our hearts and our country to these people.
