Dear Friends

For the annual observance of Refugee and Migrant Sunday, 28th August 2005, the following items are enclosed:

  1. The late Pope John Paul II's message for 2005.

  2. A message from Bishop Joseph Grech* Chairman of the Committee for Migrants and Refugees of the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference;

  3. A poster* for display in your church or school.

  4. Liturgy notes based on the Year A texts of the 22nd Sunday of Ordinary Time (August 28th)*

*You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view these files.

In his message, Bishop Grech speaks about a National Conference to be held on 17/18 November 2005 at Randwick Racecourse Function Centre, NSW. Please put these dates in your diary. Registration brochures will be available soon. In preparation for the National Conference, Catholic Immigration/Multicultural offices have arranged/will arrange State Consultations. A list of contact details for these offices is enclosed.

Last year I told you that the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People had just released an instruction entitled “Erga Migrantes Caritas Christi” (The Love of Christ towards Migrants). The Instruction calls for a renewed understanding of the pastoral care which the Church provides for people on the move (who include migrants, refugees and asylum seekers). Copies of this Instruction in booklet form are now available through the Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office (ACMRO) at $4 each. The instruction is also on the ACMRO website at www.acmro.catholic.org.au

You will find other helpful material for Refugee and Migrant Sunday on the website of the National Council of Churches in Australia at www.ncca.org.au under i) Departments (Christian World Service), ii) at work with refugees and iii) Refugee and Migrant Sunday.

I hope that these suggestions assist you to celebrate Refugee and Migrant Sunday in a fitting way.

Yours sincerely in Christ

Rev Monsignor John Murphy
Director ACMRO
